That's a cool idea. I can imagine that it gets you out of whatever pattern you have fallen into and gives you new perspective.

I too was amazed at how much better the sports writing is than news writing. It happened after I became a Nats fan!

Thanks for a concrete tool to continue to turn writing talent and interest into a craft. It certainly is a process!

One thing I like to do (writers have their own ideas of FUN!) is to take words or phrases from different sections of the newspaper (for example, Sports and Business, or Health and Arts, and list them side by side. Then combine the words or phrases to make unique turns of phrases.

And as someone who hardly reads the Sports section of The Washington Post, I was amazed to find out that some of the best writing in the Post is in the Sports' Section!

In college, my English professors gave kudos for long (but properly done) sentences! Hard habit to break! :)

About 1/2 way through the book ... very engaging and different style of writing. One quirk the writer has is incredibly long sentences ... and long chapters. From one who just has to finish a chapter before turning out the lights at night, I've been forced by drooping eyelids to change my reading habits ... as sometimes I just can't make it to the end before having to give it up and turn out the lights. He does a good job of making LaJoy the villian with the single scene of ordering expensive wines at the neighborhood restaurant.
