Chapter One
Services and Fees
Writing a book is an intense, personal undertaking, fraught with self-doubt. You may find yourself wondering whether your characters are as interesting to others as they are to you, whether your prose flows smoothly, whether your plot works, or whether you are getting your message out. Since a book is a big investment of time and emotion, it is well worth getting a second opinion.
That's where we come in. We get excited about works-in-progress and love the adventure of figuring out how to make them better. We are fast, efficient, affordable, and highly professional. And we care. (As published authors, we know what it's like to take a book from conception to publication.)
NOTE: We can improve your copy, enhance your plot, organize your book so it sings, and help you write a first rate book proposal. We cannot guarantee that all that will result in agent representation or publication.
FEES: Because the nature of what we do varies dramatically from job to job, we will probably have to talk to you about your project before we can give you an estimated price. Initial consultations are free. We charge by the hour or by the job.

Here's how we've helped some of our clients:
- An author who felt his publisher was not giving him adequate editorial assistance sought us out for manuscript editing before his book went to press.
- A woman had been trying to sell her "how to" book for years but had been unable to attract an agent. We wrote her a book proposal and query letters. This time several agents have expressed interest. ► Book Proposal Article
- A neophyte fiction writer submits a chapter to us each week for book critiquing, rather than take a course in writing.
- A fiction writer with vivid ideas and a fixed plot sought our help as book doctors in building suspense and improving character development.
- A memoir writer needed an editor to help change her voice to be more appealing to a mass audience.
- A college professor came up with a great idea for a book on a subject he had researched exhaustively. As a non-native English speaker, he needed a ghostwriter. We transformed his ideas into a book.
